Claudia Montero

Teacher / Director Artestudio

Originally from Mexico City and a resident of Austin, Texas since 2004, graduated as a Dental Surgeon from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) while simultaneously studying Visual Arts at ENAP, UNAM.

In Oaxaca, Mexico, she took painting, drawing, and ceramics courses at the Rufino Tamayo Workshop and worked at the Handmade Paper Factory of San Agustín Etla, founded by the renowned artist Francisco Toledo.

In Montreal, Canada, she taught art classes to children with special needs at the YMCA and developed creative workshops for various age groups.

In Mexico, she worked as a substitute teacher in sculpture, drawing, and painting workshops at FESC Cuautitlán, UNAM, and illustrated the children’s book “Alita: ¿Quién soy? ¿Dónde estoy? ¿Qué soy?” published by TT&T Publishers.

In Austin, Texas, she has worked on and collaborated in numerous artistic and community projects:

Cine Las Américas: Film classification for its annual competition.

Proyecto Teatro: Volunteer makeup artist.

Austin Creative Reuse Center: Teacher and artist in projects using recycled materials, including exhibitions at the X Games and with the City of Austin, where she was a guest artist at the center’s opening.

Imagine Art: Teacher and volunteer in programs for artists with special needs.

Austin Boys and Girls Clubs: Guest artist for live painting at their annual gala.

In 2019, she created the concept for Tzompantli – Artistic Reflection, and in 2020 began leading this international exhibition, which brings together artists from around the world. It has been showcased annually in different consulates, universities, cultural centers, and galleries in both Mexico and the United States.

She was selected by Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to participate in the 1st Binational Gathering of Artists of Mexican origin living in the USA in Mexico City. She was invited again in 2022 for the 3rd edition at CECUT in Tijuana and, most recently, was invited for the 5th edition in 2024, reaffirming her commitment to promoting Mexican art abroad.

She currently volunteers as a teacher at the Blanton Museum of Art and collaborates with Chacmool / Itacate Cultural and the Consulate General of Mexico in Austin to promote Mexican culture in the United States through exhibitions, talks, and screenings.

As an artist, she works with a variety of techniques and materials (charcoal, acrylic, oil, glass, metal, wood, and recycled items), exploring the theme of fragmentation, a central concept in her work that invites the viewer to interact and create unique experiences.

Since 2010, she has directed and taught at Artestudio Austin, where she fosters the creativity and artistic authenticity of her students, helping them develop their own visual language.
